Whatever Will the Woo-Woos Say?

by GrouchoMarxist

Visitors, if you like this post, please

biden_portrait_146pxOur good friend Joe Biden is back in the news thanks to some interesting comments he made earlier today. In this case, however, it doesn’t look as if Joe was dining on his favorite dish — pickled foot — but rather signaling a fairly major shift in US foreign policy.

“Israel has to work toward a two-state solution,” declared Vice-President Joe Biden today in a speech to the annual conference of a powerful pro-Israel lobby group in Washington.

“You’re not going to like my saying this,” he warned the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac) before adding that the Jewish state should not build any more settlements on Palestinian territory, and should “dismantle existing outposts and allow Palestinians freedom of movement”.

As the Times article points out, Biden isn’t the only member of the administration toeing this line in advance of coming talks with Israel and the Palestinians.

General James Jones, Mr Obama’s National Security Adviser, is also said to have told a European foreign minister that — unlike the Bush Administration — the White House was now ready to be “forceful” with Israel.

“The new Administration will convince Israel to compromise on the Palestinian question,” General Jones was reported to have written in a confidential telegramme. “We will not push Israel under the wheels of a bus, but we will be more forceful toward Israel than we have been under Bush.” General Jones is due to travel to London next week for talks with British officials and Mr Netanyahu’s security adviser, Uzi Arad.

If the administration really does intend to take a more evenhanded approach to the Israel/Palestine issue, it comes as a welcome change to many of us who have supported the state of Israel, while at the same time being critical of its treatment of some of its neighbors. In light of the recent election of a right-wing government in Israel, it’s refreshing to see American politicians speaking up for the Palestinians. Especially in front of an AIPAC meeting.

Of course, they did send Joe out to give the speech, so if the trial balloon falls flat, they can always blame it on Biden’s chronic case of foot-in-mouth disease. But this sure does seem like an indication that the Obama administration is going to advocate for more just treatment of the Palestinians — certainly more than BushCo ever did.

But I can only feel for the poor Woo-Woos who are convinced that Obama is another puppet of the vast Jewish conspiracy. This is gonna confuse the hell out of them.

Very well but scary at the same time. You would not believe what lengths the healthcare industry would go to block the public option Dr. Dean and most Dems want to pass. There are starting the Harry and Loise commercials all over again, doing thousands of robocalls and even sending faux letters to the editor to newspapers written by insurance companies. I published the whole briefing on a healthcare thread but this link contains the highlights.

Two of my favorite anecdotes are about the late Queen Mother. Most of her household were gay men. One day, they were late with her lunch. Riding down on the elevator, she found her cook and her footman having an argument.

Her comment: “When you two old queens finish fighting, THIS old Queen would like her lunch.”

When Margaret Thatcher suggested that gay men were a security threat, The Q. M. asked, “But who will serve us?”

Another by the by…. Dave Letterman mentioned Helen getting the Oscar nomination for her role in “A film about a bitter and out of touch English queen…. The Elton John Story.”

I agree and have said that as well but people then go on a rant that the president can do more than one thing at a time like he does not have enough on his plate. But the real problem they don’t realize is that healthcare is at it’s zenith in terms of public attention and the longer congress waits the less chance it will pass any real healthcare reform.

Never forget that pundits are not the same as advocates. They have their healthcare so it’s not an issue for them. It’s all about forwarding whatever personal agenda they have.
