Morning, Rangers! Another week has come and gone, and it’s time to take stock with the latest edition of Sunday Roundup. On deck this week: a confirmation circus, healthcare highlights, stupid Republican tricks, and a fond farewell to the most trusted man in America. So grab the morning beverage of your choice and settle in for the ride.
Just the Facts
America was saddened on Friday to learn of the death of the greatest anchorman of his generation — and one of the greatest newsmen in our history — as Walter Cronkite passed away at the age of 92. For 19 years as the host of the CBS Evening News, Cronkite chronicled the story of America in a truly fair and balanced way — through the good times, and the bad. He always fought to get facts to the American people, without bias, without hype, without spin. Just the facts.
His reputation for no-nonsense reporting earned him the nickname “The Most Trusted Man in America,” and for good reason. For a generation of Americans, gathering around the television to watch Cronkite report the stories of the day was as regular a routine as going to Church on Sunday or watching fireworks on the 4th of July. And no one who has occupied an anchor’s chair since Cronkite “retired” in 1981 has come close to emulating his professionalism and passion for truth above all over concerns.
We can only hope that there is a generation of young journalists out there who will pay attention to the numerous tributes to Cronkite that have sprung up since his passing, and seek to learn from his example. We could use more courageous reporters like him — reporters whose only concern is getting the story and getting it right.
Winners: Lies, Obfuscation, Spin, Hype
Losers: The Truth
Court TV
Some of our country’s most prominent Senators got the chance to do what they do best this week: preen for the cameras seriously deliberate over important issues, as the Judiciary Committee began its hearings on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. The live gavel-to-gavel coverage showcased all the tomfoolery gravity that the upper house of our national legislature is known for, as this gaggle of stuffed shirts prestigious body peppered Judge Sotomayor with nonsense questions about her qualifications and experience.
Kellygrrrl did a great job of providing an account of the opening days of the proceedings, so we won’t go into the details here, but there are a few highlights of note. The hearings, of course, were the first test for newly-minted Senator Al Franken, and he acquitted himself very well. The same might not be said for Republican Senators Jeff Sessions, Jon Kyl, Lindsey Graham, and others, who managed to turn the whole thing into a circus spent an inordinate amount of time making the case that Judge Sotomayor is a wise Latina.
Sessions also used the confirmation hearings as an opportunity to grandstand raise his concerns about President Obama, which is odd, because Obama was already confirmed by the American people back in November. Kyl, meanwhile, seemed more worried about the room temperature. And since no circus would be complete without clowns, we were also treated to the daily round of incoherent concerned protesters being tossed out of the hearings by chairman Patrick Leahy. Oh, well, at least the Senators got a chance to talk a little baseball in the middle of all the confusion.
Despite the carnival atmosphere however, it was clear by the end of the week that Judge Sotomayor is well on her way to confirmation. Nothing that came up during the hearings came close to disqualifying her, and she has even earned the votes of several Republicans. So despite some of the sour grapes concerns being expressed by the right, it’s pretty clear that Judge Sotomayor will be confirmed in short order.
Winners: Sonia Sotomayor, Al Franken
Losers: Jeff Sessions, Jon Kyl, et al
Healthcare Happenings
More movement on the healthcare front this week, as committees in the House and the Senate worked to advance legislation that would realize president Obama’s goal of providing health insurance — including a public option — for all Americans. On Wednesday, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted 13-10 to send its version of the bill to the full Senate, where it will be combined with additional measures from the Senate Finance Committee. The Finance Committee is expected to have its version passed by July 21 or 22.
Meanwhile, two House committees — Education and Labor, and Ways and Means — voted on Friday to advance their bills for consideration in the full House. And the third committee involved in putting the final bill together, the Energy and Commerce Committee, is expected to complete its piece of the puzzle next week.
Despite the progress made in Congress this week, however, the fight for healthcare reform is still an uphill battle, as the Congressional Budget Office again on Thursday warned of the costs of these measures, and Republicans and other people who already have health insurance critics were quick to jump on the bandwagon. These concerns, which Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) termed “wacky,” threatened to stall the reform measures, as they prompted a wacky bi-partisan group of Senators to ask leadership to extend the process past the president’s Aug. 1 deadline.
The president, however, was having none of it, as he again took to the airwaves Friday afternoon to address cost concerns and rally support for healthcare reform. Full text of his statement is available here. And Obama wasn’t the only one. White House Economic Council Director Larry Summers also made the case for health reform on Friday, while House Democratic leaders pledged to continue making progress. Meanwhile, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has introduced an online petition in support of the president’s healthcare agenda.
All told, a good week for our side. We still have a long way to go, but we are making progress.
Winners: The Senate HELP Committee, The House Ways and Means Committee, The House Education and Labor Committee
Losers: Wacky People
Defying a ban on public demonstrations, thousands of Iranian pro-reform activists gathered at a prayer service on Friday to hear Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani deliver a sermon criticizing the government and its response to post-election protests. It was the first time that the reformist cleric and ally of presidential opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi had led prayers in eight weeks. Outside, police and pro-government militia fired tear gas and charged crowds of demonstrators in an increasingly futile attempt to quell the unrest. The protest, held at Tehran University, was the largest such demonstration in weeks, which confirms that the reform movement in the Islamic Republic is still going strong despite the government crackdown.
Texas Governor Sy Sperling Rick Perry had his 10-gallon hat in his hand this week, as the Lone Star State found itself running out of unemployment-benefit funds — a situation which could cause a delay in payment to as many as 82,000 jobless citizens. And that’s not even counting the 41,000 new Texans who hit the unemployment rolls in June. So Gov. “Remember Ft. Sumter” Perry did the only thing he could do: He crawled on his hands and knees to beg money from the Federal Government. Yes, the same Gov. Perry who turned down $555 million in Federal stimulus money intended to cover unemployment benefits is now asking the Federal government for a loan to cover unemployment benefits. And the beauty of it all: The state wouldn’t have had to repay the stimulus money, but it will have to repay a loan. And the taxes it will take to repay the loan probably won’t sit well with Gov. Goodhair’s Teabaggin’ buddies. Sometimes justice is remarkably poetic.
And speaking of those crazy conservatives, FRT’s resident advice columnist sends in this expose from Politico on the doings of Republican Lothario Gov. Mark Sanford (R-Argentina). Apparently, the clay-footed paragon of wingnut family values beleaguered politician has more than just his mistress to worry about, as Politico details how he’s been living large on the taxpayer dime. To be fair, there’s no real suggestion that he did anything illegal, but it does go to show that Gov. Feelgood’s hypocrisy isn’t limited to his family values. It bleeds over into his fiscal conservatism, as well.
SurferKit gave us the heads up on some good news, as a House Appropriations subcommittee voted to pass a spending bill that eliminates funding for abstinence-only sex-education programs. Instead, the bill provides some $114 million for “a new teen pregnancy prevention initiative” that has been championed by president Obama. Predictably, the wingnuts are whining like a kid who got socks for Christmas expressing their concern over this move, but rational people rational people see it as a positive step toward preventing unwanted pregnancies and disease.
The House Intelligence Committee announced on Friday that it will investigate potential lawbreaking in the matter of a covert CIA counterintelligence program that was reportedly run by former Vice President Dick “Dick” Cheney. Including whether or not the CIA was ordered to illegally withhold information from Congress. It might not amount to anything, but any story that can combine the words “investigate,” “lawbreaking,” and “Dick Cheney” in the same sentence is worth a mention. Stay tuned.
And finally, in sports news, Tiger Woods missed the cut at the British Open. No, seriously, Tiger Woods missed the cut at the British Open. It’s not a joke. Tiger Woods missed the cut at the British Open. But that’s not even the real story. After the third round was complete on Saturday, 59-year-old Tom Watson led the tournament. Should he go on to take the Claret Jug today, Watson would become the oldest man ever to win the British Open in its 138-year history — indeed, the oldest major championship winner in the history of golf’s major championships. Give ‘em hell, Tom!
And that’s the way it is, Sunday, July 19, 2009. As always, if you come across an interesting bit of news, an underreported story, or an article that you think other Rangers need to read, send me a PM through the Forum or email submissions@freerangetalk.com. Now the floor’s open for comments. Happy Sunday!

Okay … I’ll try one last time (for fun).
1) FRT is looking to expand its membership (it better cuz original members are dropping out faster than a 1971 hippy on lsd).
2) New members see the “uncensored” and “unmoderated” tag and assume that’s true. Until they actually post a comment and what’s the first thing that happens … their posy is censored and moderated.
3) You are in a very competitive market right now and the average blogger is pretty sophisticated soooooooooooo it could be (and I suspect it is) very problematic if their original foray into frt is censored and/or moderated …
WHOEVER THE FUCK IS DOING IT
Do any of you out there see that?
C’mon … if FRT wants to grow past the 22 members who post her like it’s religious commitment you’re going to have to address this problem.
And ya know kids … it’s still just 22 – 23 of you doing all the commenting.

His body doesn’t look that different from the guy who won. It’s not like they’e playing an exhaustive sport. They’re hitting a ball with a stick for chrissake! Perry, that’s my governor and a more ignorant tool of a governor can’t be found now that Bible Spice has resigned. Texas is a “weak governor” state (how do you think W was able to last two terms?) and the only reason he was able to screw up this badly is because of the ReThug gerrymandered districts courtesy of DeLay. The Round Up was great Groucho!!! I am so happy the repubs jeep shooting themselves over and over. Healthcare seems like it’s really going to happen, and we will have a very intelligent, woman of color on our SC!!! I also like the gal he has chosen for Surgeon General. As far a s Tom Watson goes, I will be rooting him on!!! If Tiger can’t be there,
I’ll definitely take the old guy!!! Oh, may Walter Cronkite RIP. He was one in a million. I wonder if they’ll have a lottery for his memorial??

I DO think rejecting the stimulus money and not being able to keep up with unemployment benefits should really shake things up.

o/t “Hilzoy” Goodbye Letter on Obsidian Wings.
I learned so much from Hilzoy, and am so very grateful for the great work on OW throughout the Dark Era.
Fare thee well, Hilzoy. Happy Travels!

I love that Perry now has his hat in hand, begging for funds.
What a fool!
Great column, as always.

I also love that every American knows that Gov Sanford and Gov Palin refused stim money for the people, and used the people’s money for their own personal luxuries

Agreed. I noticed Sanford’s approval numbers have dropped 22 points since he announced his heartbreaking story of forbidden lurrrv. Reminds me of that song : “Torn between two lovers, feeling like a fool, loving both of you is breakin’ all the rules…”

but I don’t think he lurvvvs wifey AT ALL … he made that pretty clear. It would make for an interesting movie.
You think Oli Stone or Qunetin T would do it justice?

I’m not sure. Maybe John Hughes

should make it, because Sanford is a teenager in a old man’s body.

“We can only hope that there is a generation of young journalists out there who will pay attention to the numerous tributes to Cronkite that have sprung up since his passing, and seek to learn from his example.”
I believe there are those out there who would aspire to such greatness. Sadly, it’s a different game now, and nobody will ever achieve that level. Cronkite’s passing marks the death of an era.

I personally felt that Miss Lindsey and NoRegard Sessions, et al., did a FABULOUS job.
Honestly, the ReThugs are doing such a bang-up job of taking themselves to extinction, that we should just focus now on getting rid of the wolves in Dem clothing

So, let me get this straight. Gov.dumbass Perry turned down free money in favor of a loan which will eventually raise taxes? Instead of getting money that every Americans was lending at a low price, he decided to go for a loan that would be expensive in the long run? Geez, doesn’t that sound like those lazy Amurikans who took a house that was way over their budget?!

Great roundup as usual, Groucho- I hadn’t heard about the story in TX. Poetic justice indeed! It’s too bad, though, the residents have to pay for Perry’s stoopid mistakes. Perhaps they’ll remember this come election time. And I always appreciate a little sports news! Loved it that T. Watson is leading the pack.
