From Love in the Time of Cholera

An English Translation:

Oh my love! There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you
to have you for a second, far away from the world
and close to me
Oh my love! Just like the Magdalena river
which melts into the sand of the sea,
I want to melt with you.

There are loves which become resistant to damage,
just like wine improves through the years,
that’s how my feelings grow for you.

There are loves which wait for winter and bloom
and in the autumn evenings turn green again,
just like the love I feel for you.

Oh my love! Dont forget the sea,
which has seen me crying at night
so many memories of you.
Oh my love! Dont forget the day
which separated your life
from this poor life that I am bound to live.

There are loves which become resistant to damage,
just like wine improves through the years,
that’s how my feelings for you grow.

There are loves which seem to end and bloom
and in the autumn evenings turn green again,
just like the love I feel for you
I feel for you.. for you.. like the love I feel for
you.

Fabulous music. I dugg it! It’s the Spanish blood in me. My great grandfather was half Spanish.

Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez, or better known as Gabriel Garcia Márquez, wrote this wonderful book in 1985. Although best read in the original Spanish, there is a good translation published by Alfred Α. Knopf, Inc. in 1988.

The movie is a better than average adaptation and reflects the mood of the book well. It is an enjoyable Saturday matinee.

On his own initiative, García Márquez convinced Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Shakira, who hails from the nearby city of Barranquilla, to provide three songs for the film: “Hay Amores”, “Despedida” and “Pienso En Ti”. The songs were written with Brazilian composer Antonio Pinto. The full score was composed by Pinto, who also scored City of God and Lord of War. Shakira was also invited to play as an actress in the film, but Shakira rejected this offer as she did not wish to appear nude.

The song “Despedida” (music by Shakira and Antonio Pinto; lyrics by Shakira) was nominated for Best Original Song in a motion picture in the 65th Golden Globe Awards.

The other song – Pienso en ti – was also from Shakira’s first major breakthrough CD – Pies Descalzos (Bare feet). I first heard this album when living Mexico in the mid-90’s, fell in love with the young singer and saw her in concert in Monterrey.
