tagline

The Harry Potter Alliance is a group dedicated to bringing together Harry Potter fans from everywhere to spread love and fight the Dark Arts in the real world. From raising funds to help those in Darfur, to helping how ever they can to make sure all have equal rights in all issues.

The HPA have organized what they call the most magical piece of activism that they have ever tried.  A most worthy endeavor to be sure… they plan to Wizard Rock The Vote all over Maine on Saturday, October 24th, to get the Muggles out to vote against Proposition One, which would repeal Marriage Equality for same sex couples in Maine.

The main part of the event takes place in Portland, starting with concerts by Harry and the Potters, and Draco and the Malfoys.  After the concert, the attendees will be given training on how to go door to door, then sent out into the neighborhoods  to promote equality in marriage and let voters know about the importance of voting no on Prop One.   They will also be running a National phone bank that anyone in the country can use if they want to volunteer to call Maine voters.

Their site gives this reason as to why…

Marriage Equality:

In May 2009, Maine’s governor signed the marriage equality bill into law. People opposed to equal marriage for same-sex couples have organized a ballot that would repeal equal marriage, similar to what happened in California with Proposition 8. This ballot is called Proposition One, and the HPA is working with Mass and Maine Equality to stop it.

It looks like this vote is going to be close. You may be the deciding factor. There are so many of us–we need each one of you to either knock on doors or make phone calls. We’re coming together to celebrate Wizard Rock, Equal Rights, and Love as our greatest weapon!

Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood

Participants in the event will join one of the four houses from the Harry Potter books.  Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff.  The more people each house talks to, the more points they are awarded in a House Cup competition simular to the ones held at Hogwarts.   A fun incentive to motivate Dumbledore’s Army into getting the word out on Prop One.

Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood in the Potter films,  will be heading the phone bank and will serve as the Head of Ravenclaw.

The Harry Potter Alliance is also involved in other projects such as:

  • Raising Money for Darfur and Burma through Trick-or-Treating, Penny Drives, and Bake Sales
  • Organizing Book Drives
  • Registering Community Members to vote
  • Collecting food for local food banks
  • Organizing Benefit Concerts
  • Breaking out of the Muggle Mindset through movie screenings, crafts tables, and reading programs
  • Doing Magical Acts of Kindness

I’m so glad you did the post Noch, had heard about this last night, and was just thrilled that they are doing this. It’s going to take a lot of clever strategies to combat the high-powered PR firm the opposition hired from California.

So good to have an encouraging story, for a change.

Kids can be a tremendous force for change… and, of course, it’s their futures they are protecting.

Me, too… and his photography is so spectacular. If he’s hibernating, someone needs to give him a little nudge.
