Hitsville U.S.A.  Home of the Motown Museum ~ Detroit, Michigan

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Motown Records celebrates 5o years of music magic this month!

All over the country special tribute concerts will be held to mark this half century anniversary of a sound that helped shape the music of generations of fans.     Here in Detroit we get the privilege of having Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Otis Williams and many others  performing at the event, which is also a fundraiser with all proceeds going towards the Motown Museum.  Very cool!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Here is a nice montage of the Motown years.

Here is a link for a really nice tribute video that had no embed code, but worth watching if you are in to Motown.

When I was growing up, the Motown sound was it.  There was no where in Detroit you could go and not hear that special sound, it permeated the very fabric and soul of the city.   Motown is Living For The City.

The Daily Question is…

Are you a fan of Motown?  How did the music of Motown play a part in your life?

As someone who grew up in the rural South I can agree with EdV that Motown helped get the kids together. I remember when we were taken into assembly and told that we would have black kids joining us the following year and we should show politeness to them and the principal did not want any shenanigans. WE were the only high school in the county that did not have racial incidents.
I did not go to the dances, it was couples time, if you did not have a date you didn’t go, but I remember watching Ed Sullivan and hearing all the greats.

The thing that Motown doesn’t get credit for, is their huge influence in making the civil rights movement popular amongst the young, white population of the time. I met many kids from , let’s say, “southerly” climes, who said that, until they heard Motown, they thought that Blacks only sang spirituals. They became huge fans, and it’s hard to hate people who can make you dance. Motown put a face on Blacks in this country – on the radio, and (thanks mainly to Ed Sullivan) on television. That irresistable music won as many hearts as the eloquence of Dr. King.

In those days, music was the rallying point for young people, and the movements, in general, and Motown introduced many to African-Americans for the first time – and what an introduction. They not only broke barriers in the music industry, they broke barriers in radio (remember that Black music was called “race music” back then, and only played on certain stations, but this music FORCED stations to play it), television, and society at large.

    Bravo.

    What about the Philly sound?

Agreed on the fact that Motown made a certain kind of music more acceptable among certain circles. Although if any of those people had half a brain they would have been already listening to blues.

I agree. Being raised in the South myself, it put Black people in an entirely different light than I was used to.

Although my parents were politically liberal and were not opposed to the civil rights movement, they really didn’t see it being their concern and still referred to Blacks as Negroes or Coloreds. My maternal grandmother was old school and would not even speak to a Black person.

I added a video of what I think is a pretty good version of “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder when he was on Sesame Street. Nice groove…

Always loved that song too, both Stevie’s and Jeff Beck’s version. Stevie originally wrote the song for Jeff Beck before recording it himself.

Stevie’s has funk while Beck turns it into kick ass rock.

I am not sure if I have heard Beck’s version of it… I will have to check that out.

I always loved Motown. It’s hard to think of an American music group whose sound embodied the ’60s more than The Supremes.

Although I have to admit my absolute favorite R&B song was recorded in LA, Tina Turner’s River Deep, Mountain High.

Not beautiful by any means… but she is sex on legs!!!
When Madonna tries being sexy, groping her crotch etc.. and britney starts gyrating, you feel like saying… “Don’t bother… I have a week old lettuce in the fridge that has more sex appeal than you……. wanna see sex appeal…..take a lesson….. look at Tina… and Shirley Bassey ain’t no slouch neither”You’ve either got it, or you ain’t…. not something you can ”aquire”…. and she has it in spades!!!
Most sensible thing Prince Charles ever said was when he told Tina “You have great legs”

    EspritDeVoltaire

    (Report comment)

I disagree, I’ve always found her to be beautiful, especially when she was younger. As is said, “Even the ugly may sometimes be quite beautiful, the merely pretty – never”.

    ScouserInLondon

I meant not beautiful in the traditionally accepted way.
She is one of those women, who are not “pretty” or gorgeous… but because of their inherent womanliness, sex appeal etc. they are more beautiful than your starlets and beauty queens.
So, I agree with you… maybe I just put it badly.
Susan Sarandon is another…. knock the spots of women half her age.
Both of them would stop a room when they entered.
