If You Can’t Beat ‘em, Join Them in the Palintology *Updated*

by hardybear

sarah-palin-cartoonIn all honesty, we thought the only way to survive the next week of the Black Hole of Palintology  was a self-defense posting of a spot to run her greatest hits. And because she’s Sarah, they will certainly just  keep on coming, live.

It’s somehow comforting to think of Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, rather than of the former-Governoring, mavericky, moose-huntin’, fancy-pageant-walkin’ broad herself. If she does run in 2012, Lorne Michaels had better have Tina locked down.

The folks who brilliantly put together Going Rouge should go down in history as expert purveyors of political satire.  Here is an interview of the authors, from Truthout.

.

“Going Rouge” Takes On the Palin Nightmare

Maya Schenwar, Truthout

Next Tuesday, when Sarah Palin’s already-bestselling memoir, “Going Rogue: An American Life,” hits shelves, another much-anticipated look at the Palin phenomenon will also debut: “Going Rouge: Sarah Palin – An American Nightmare” . I interviewed Richard Kim and Betsy Reed, the editors of “Going Rouge,” about Palin’s place in the American political landscape, her influence on the tenor of Republican politics, and why they did not choose to make Levi Johnston a focal point of their anthology.

Why do you think Sarah Palin remains so widely accepted by conservatives as a viable national politician, despite her obvious shortcomings?

BR: I think she does have quite a strong following among a certain cohort of Christian, conservative, white, married women. The Republican party is a mostly male phenomenon, but I think Republicans recognized that they needed to do better with women when they picked her.

sarah-palinRK: Going back to what Betsy said earlier, the narrative that she sends out of being persecuted is actually deeply resonant now with that portion of the Republican Party, which is out of power in the White House, out of power in Congress, and seeing the policies of the Bush years being rolled back. She constantly says, “I’m not being recognized by the national media, so I’m going to go rogue and tell you the story directly.” In that way she can bypass Washington and bypass the media world.

BR: It’s nothing new – The American right has always felt itself to be aggrieved. … MS: That sense of victimhood can make it difficult for the media to cover Sarah Palin at all. If you had to map out a strategy for the progressive media in confronting the phenomenon of Sarah Palin over the next couple of years, what would you include?

RK: Some of the humor in the book just comes from quoting Sarah Palin. She’s funny enough just on her own. There’s a piece in the book that puts Sarah Palin’s own words into verse, in haiku form.

Some SNL moments:

Say it ain’t so Joe.

Well, Katie …

From Jonathan Meacham at Newsweek:

Why Palin Matters to Obama—And to You

Goldwater was a seminal figure, and is too often caricatured as a nuclear cowboy by the left and as a conservative John the Baptist by the right. … Now comes Sarah Palin, an heir to the Goldwater tradition, to try to harness the conservative discontent abroad in the land. Her political celebrity is so powerful that it has reduced a large part of the Republican Party to irrationality and civic incoherence. According to Gallup, Republicans are more likely to say they would seriously consider voting for Palin for president (65 percent) than to say she is qualified for the job (58 percent). At the moment she is promoting a book. But she is also, inevitably, promoting a distinctive political sensibility.

What Obama advisers privately refer to as “Palinism” has created a climate of ideological purity inside the GOP. To deviate from the anti-Obama line at all—that is, to acknowledge that politics is the art of compromise—risks the censure of the party. Pure ideologues will argue that this is a good thing; others like, say, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close friend of Palin’s onetime champion John McCain, think differently. Graham was denounced last week by the Charleston County Republican Party for working with Democrats on issues such as climate change; the senator’s office replied by invoking President Reagan’s belief that “elected officials need to find common ground and work together to solve difficult problems.”

Here’s a doozy, from Bob Weir:

In the liberal mind, Obama can do no wrong, mainly because he’s black. If he fouls up with a misstatement or a faux pas, they’ll cover for him as though they were protecting a child with a debilitating disease. It reminds me of what Bush 2 used to refer to as “the soft bigotry of low expectations.” When one of these sycophants asks Obama a question, it’s not only a softball, but it comes with heavy breathing and dangling tongues.

Compare that to the lion’s den that Palin walked into every time she sat down with one of Obama’s obsequious panderers. Given the ideology of the interviewers, I already knew how things would turn out. What really impressed me was watching this woman muster the courage to face her liberal antagonists on national television. How much courage does it take for Obama to engage in one of those cozy love-fests with his fan club?
What this country needs is a strong conservative leader with the courage of her convictions. Sensing those qualities in Sarah Palin, the liberal left is becoming frantic because they can’t seem to halt her popularity. The reason they’re panicking is because they’re afraid of her connection with regular folks who work for a living, pay their taxes, attend a religious worship service regularly, and believe that our country has lost the moral fiber that once united us. The book Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy covered several historical figures who stood up against the corruption surrounding them and defeated it. Sarah Palin did exactly that in her home state of Alaska. In a saner time in our history, she’d be a shoo-in for the White House.

He calls it like he sees it, and he’s very, very, very effective.”

PALIN: Right, told after wards and that, that was always puzzling to me because if I were to respond to a reporter’s questions very candidly, honestly, for instance, they say, “what do you think about the campaign pulling out of Michigan” and I think, “darn I wish we weren’t. Every vote matters, I can’t wait to get back to Michigan” and then told afterwards that, “oh, you screwed up. You went rogue on us Sarah, you’re not supposed to be.” And my reminder to the campaign was, I didn’t know we pulled out of Michigan. My entire VP team, we didn’t know that we had pulled out. Good catch, kel. Obviously she hasn’t the requisite smarts to realize that every quote and piece of film will be used against her in future, no matter what she runs for. ‘Setting the record straight’ runs the extreme risk of creating gaffes far graver than the original issue.

She either lacks the most basic political savvy … or is playing a deeper game involving the current populist climate than is readily understood.

So I have to share my daily Fucktard Moment. Driving home from the barn last night, I’m listening to radio for traffic report, catch a talk show with “Steve Yuhas”, a former Marine, conservative viewpoint. Topic was irregularities and poor mgmt. at Arlington. He starts reading a press release that begins “Arlington National Cemetary, where Pres. Kennedy and other heroes are buried….” and Yuhas says:
“Why is his name first? Why is Kennedy even mentioned? He’s not a hero. It’s not heroic to get your head blown off by an assassin! He shouldn’t be mentioned along with the real heroes.”

So, I wrote an email to the station manager saying:
“I was stunned by Steve Yuhas’ tasteless and uncalled-for remarks regarding Pres. Kennedy and suggest he look up Kennedy’s heroism during WW2. In case his research skills are as weak as his historical knowledge, here is a link “(and I linked to the Kennedy Library page on PT109)

4:56: You are the Queen, Oprah

Only a few minutes to go, Oprah has to find a way to bring it back to being all about her. Can the queen of daytime TV do it?

“One final question,” Oprah says. “Should I be worried? Because I have heard that you’re going to get your own talk show.”

    “Oh,” Palin says.

“Yeah — come on,” Oprah says sweetly — only maybe not. Palin’s not taking the hint. Finally, she gets it:

“Oprah, you are the queen of talk shows. There’s nothing to over worry about.”

    “No, no,” Oprah simpers.

“Yes,” Palin insists, then, sensing this is playing big with Oprah, she plows ahead: “You can’t shut off my mic so let me say this — or maybe you can. You’re the boss.”

“No, I won’t,” Oprah assures her. “Go ahead” she insists.

“Okay, the inspiration that you have provided…..those were the years where I was a stay-at-home-mom — got to watch you more than I watch you now… and being quite inspired by some of the challenges you were facing…you provided a lot of inspiration and I appreciate what you have done all these years,” Palin cooed.

A MUST article read from WaPo:

“Among the more revealing moments in Palin’s book comes this one: One morning during the campaign, she was showering when she received a telephone call with pastor Rick Warren, who had offered to pray with her. “I said, absolutely! Pray away!,” she writes. “I would never turn down prayer even with limited hours in a campaign day, standing in a few inches of water with a shower curtain for a wardrobe. You do what you’ve got to do.”

“I love meat,” Palin writes. “I eat pork chops, thick bacon burgers, and the seared fatty edges of a medium-well-done steak. But I especially love moose and caribou. I always remind people from outside our state that there’s plenty of room for all Alaska’s animals — right next to the mashed potatoes.”

And when she first put eyes on Todd Palin in the school gym she whispered, “Thank you, God.” She writes that she really knew that he was the one for her when “he told me he had become a Christian and had been baptized at a sports camp.”

4:02: It took Oprah under 2 minutes to make it all about her:

“You know there were reports last year that I had snubbed you during the election by not having you on my show. Did you feel snubbed?” she asked and yes it was her very first question.

Palin says no, apologetically, she was really busy what with this and that.

“Really?” Oprah asks incredulously. “So at the time of the campaign when everybody was saying that I was snubbing you, you didn’t even know about it?”

This is already the best Oprah interview ever.

“It didn’t register. No offense to you — but it wasn’t the center of my universe, okay?” Palin says.

“How Sarah Palin Made Herself Indispensable While Destroying the Republican Party”
    By Max Blumenthal

“The answer lies beyond the realm of polls and punditry in the political psychology of the movement that animates and, to a great degree, controls, the Republican grassroots — a uniquely evangelical subculture defined by the personal crises of its believers and their perceived persecution at the hands of cosmopolitan elites.

By emphasizing her own crises and her victimization by the “liberal media,” Palin has established an invisible, indissoluble bond with adherents of that subculture — so visceral it transcends any rational political analysis. As a result, her career has become a vehicle through which the right-wing evangelical movement feels it can express its deepest identity in opposition both to secular society and to its representatives in the Obama White House. Palin is perceived by its leaders — and followers — not as another cynical politician or even as a self-promoting celebrity, but as a kind of magical helper, the God-fearing glamour girl who parachuted into their backwater towns to lift them from the drudgery of everyday life, assuring them that they represented the “Real America.”

“In what reads like payback for McCain aides’ disparaging comments about her in the wake of the ticket’s loss to Barack Obama, Ms. Palin depicts the McCain campaign as overscripted, defeatist, disorganized and dunder-headed — slow to shift focus from the Iraq war to the cratering economy, insufficiently tough on Mr. Obama and contradictory in its media strategy. She also claims that the campaign billed her nearly $50,000 for “having been vetted.” The vetting, which was widely criticized in the press as being cursory and rushed, was, she insists, “thorough”: they knew “exactly what they’re getting.”

Some of Ms. Palin’s loudest complaints in this volume are directed at the McCain campaign’s chief strategist, Steve Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt, ironically enough, was one of the aides to most forcefully make the case for putting her on the ticket in the first place, arguing to his boss, as Dan Balz and Haynes Johnson reported in their recent book “The Battle for America,” that she would shake up the race and help him get his “reform mojo back.” Robert Draper reported in The New York Times Magazine that neither Mr. Schmidt nor Mr. McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, apparently saw Ms. Palin’s “lack of familiarity with major national or international issues as a serious liability,” and that Mr. McCain, a former Navy pilot, saw the idea of upending the chessboard as a maverick kind of move.

All in all, Ms. Palin emerges from “Going Rogue” as an eager player in the blame game, thoroughly ungrateful toward the McCain campaign for putting her on the national stage. As for the McCain campaign, it often feels like a desperate and cynical operation, willing to make a risky Hail Mary pass in order to try to score a tactical win, instead of making a considered judgment as to who might be genuinely qualified to sit a heartbeat away from the Oval Office”

She did her best to obfuscate the issue during the campaign, but her book completely settles the question: Sarah Palin is an “I didn’t come from no monkey!” creationist.

Elsewhere in this volume, she talks about creationism, saying she “didn’t believe in the theory that human beings — thinking, loving beings — originated from fish that sprouted legs and crawled out of the sea” or from “monkeys who eventually swung down from the trees.”

There’s been one consistent theme in the public remarks Palin has made since the campaign ended—the mainstream media is biased and unfair.

She has made the point in interviews and in her responses to numerous stories written about her in the last year.

Conservative radio host John Ziegler, who interviewed Palin for his movie “Media Malpractice,” a film that criticized the media’s treatment of her, said that “the most important thing for her is to finally set the record straight and tell the real story in her own words without the incredibly biased media filter.”

“The book tour will be cathartic for her and her supporters who feel, quite justifiably, that she has been unfairly vilified by a media they no longer trust and this will give them the chance to show everyone that they know the real Sarah Palin,” said Ziegler, who has remained in contact with Palin.

Indeed, Palin has already attacked the first media outlet to obtain a copy of her book, writing Friday on her Facebook page that the Associated Press was “erroneously reporting” on her book.

Andy Barr is not too bad as far as the Politicos go.
