The infamous C Street House in the Nation’s capitol, owned by the secretive Christian group known as “The Family” and run by the mysterious Doug Coe, will no longer enjoy the loophole that gave them tax-exempt status.
The house had previously been classified as a “church” rather than a residential rental property. The house paid no taxes because it received an E1 or religious exemption. It was coded: “89 -Special Purpose-Misc” and it was classified for tax purposes as a commercial property.
Natalie Wilson, a spokeswoman for the Office of Tax and Revenue for Washington D.C., said that her office inspected the house this summer and “it was determined that portions of it were being rented out for private residential purposes.” As a result, the tax exempt status was partially revoked, and 66% of the value of the property is now subject to taxation.
According to online records, the total taxable assessment is $1,834,500. The building’s owner last month finally paid taxes of $1714.70 on the property.
The inspection and review of the house was triggered by citizen complaints, as well as several media outlets openly questioning the tax status of the residence.
A great deal of unwanted attention has been focused on the C Street House following Jeff Sharlet’s eye-popping expose “The Family,” as well as the revelations of sexual escapades of several Republican lawmakers who have resided therein, including Mark Sanford (R-SC) and John Ensign (R-NV) and Chip Pickering (R-MI).
It is alleged that both Pickering and Ensign carried on affairs from within the confines of the house. Both Ensign and Sanford have admitted that they each sought sexual healing spiritual counsel from within the walls of the house during their extramarital affairs. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) met with Ensign’s friend and former top aide, Doug Hampton, the husband of Ensign’s mistress. There has been much speculation as to precisely what that negotiation and/or transaction entailed. Coburn reportedly advised Ensign to stop the affair but has said he would never reveal the details of those discussions, citing his religious privilege as an “ordained deacon” and his doctor’s privilege.
Other lawmakers who have enjoyed the below-market rent at the frat house include Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Zach Wamp (R-TN) and Bart Stupak (D-MI) and Mike Doyle (D-PA) and former NFL player Heath Shuler (D-NC).
“The House” has been owned by “The Family” since 1989 when they purchased it from international Christian group “Youth with a Mission.” Ron Boehme, spokesman for YWAM says that YWAM is not affiliated with The Family.
Perhaps this is the beginning of a new trend of stripping tax-exempt status from political groups hiding behind religion. Can I get an AMEN!

C-Streeter Sanford to be impeached?
“The State Ethics Commission will decide whether a three-month investigation provides enough evidence that Gov. Mark Sanford broke state laws.
The commission meeting Wednesday is pivotal. Legislators have filed an impeachment resolution against Sanford and House Speaker Bobby Harrell says he’s seen nothing so far that merits removing Sanford from office and the investigation would have to show new information about serious crimes or serious misconduct.
Commission general counsel Cathy Hazelwood says Sanford’s hearing is closed. She expects the commission will release a statement afterward briefly saying whether the commission found reason to move forward against Sanford. More details of charges against Sanford could be released Friday or Monday.”

66% is taxable — the upstairs residential area and a portion of the kitchen are now categorized as res. rental property.
the rest is still considered a “church”
wonder if the powder room is the confessional booth
