Pomp and Fresh Produce, The Obama’s Host Their First State Dinner

Washington is abuzz, and not about clamoring crowds or Republicons and congressional cloture … President and First Lady Michelle Obama are hosting their premiere State Dinner this evening, in honor of the visiting Prime Minister of India,  Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur. The First Couple will be on an international stage, and  of a certainty showcasing their unique flair, taste and style.

The event will not be in the White House proper, but in a large heated pavilion tent on the lawn. Reportedly that choice was made in order to accommodate a larger number of oh-so-fortunate guests, the invitations are more coveted than a peek at the new D.C. Plum Book. A few names have leaked out, including Hollywood luminaries Steven Spielberg, David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Ari Emanuel (Rahm’s younger and badder LA agent brother). Young music star Jennifer Hudson will be singing, the pundits report. See the guest list here.

Rather than hold a press briefing with the usual cast of characters, such as the florist and chef,  the First Lady  will have several of the young women she mentors assist her this afternoon and allow some media coverage of their activities.  They will also enjoy a presentation in the State Dining Room which is scheduled to highlight a briefing on the history and protocol surrounding state and official visits. Brava, Michelle.

Schedule of the day as reported in The Washington Post:

.

The Eisenhowers host the Khrushchevs in 1954, National Archives.

At 2 p.m. the first lady tries to add some meat on the bone regarding her role as official hostess for the dinner. She has invited some of the girls in the mentoring program to the State Dining Room for a briefing on the history and protocol surrounding state and official visits.

There, reporters will see two tables featuring the place settings and china that will be used at the dinner. The menu will be released at that time, as well as the names of the entertainers for the evening and, I’m told, a host of other details.

The much anticipated guest list will be released later in the day.

At 6:15 p.m., reporters will gather in what is called the White House “booksellers” area to watch the guests arrive.

At 7 p.m. the Obamas meet up with Singh and Mrs. Kaur at the North Portico of the White House and head to the dinner at 8:15 p.m. The event will be open to the press pool for the toasts and also streamed live at www.whitehouse.gov.

.

When queried about the significance of the event yesterday, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was a little perplexed by the question but recovered to give his understanding of why India, and what does the White House want to convey:

I think it’s  … this is a very important relationship with a very important country that we have in the world. That’s why India was chosen to be the first visit. I think that’s why the White House wanted to have something as formal as this to discuss throughout this process the issues that we have bilaterally — again, what I talked about in terms of  …

Let me … let me wind through my answer here … the issues of, again, of counterterrorism, of the economy, of energy and climate change … a lot of which we read about each day in the news and obviously will be topics throughout the conversations that are had between the president and the prime minister. Again, I think is a show of respect for the value that we put on that relationship. I think India is the world’s largest democracy, and I think the relationship that we have with them and the issues that we’re dealing with them are tremendously important going forward in our future.

It appears that some portions of the event will also be streamed live on C-Span, and I will have a live feed up here as soon as one becomes available.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of tonight’s event in the context of history and cultural pomp. Menu and guest list planning began literally months in advance, and all details will be noted and critiqued, then recorded for future generations. I have included some photos of past state dinners for retrospective purposes.

“Maybe the only thing bigger than a state dinner is a royal wedding,” said former White House Chef Walter Scheib, who knows from state dinners. He estimates that planned and oversaw 35 to 40 state or official dinners during his tenure at the White House. The Reagans hosted the most in recent history, undertaking 57 … the Hollywood set knows how to entertain.

“A state dinner or official dinner is a lot more like a Broadway play than it is an actual dinner,” Chef Scheib continued, “There are so many components and so much rehearsal and so much that goes into it. Literally hundreds and maybe a thousand people involved if you look at all the components of the house.” [well, in this case, the tent]

It is traditional to honor the cuisine of the country being hosted, and in this case that will be a nod to the Indian Prime Minister’s vegetarianism. Vegetables harvested from the First Lady’s garden will be featured.

Anita McBride, chief of staff to former first lady Laura Bush, also said that the extreme pressure is now on. The diplomacy and protocol that go into planning the guest list and the seating arrangements would challenge several generations of Post etiquette mavens.

“This is the standard by which all future state dinners and officials dinners will be judged,” she said.

Naturally, there is great curiosity about the First Lady’s choice of gown for the Black Tie affair. Rumour has it that she will choose an Indian American designer, as it has been her wont to cast the spotlight on young domestic talent. Personally, I hope to see her glide regally into the event in a sari.

Deputy Press Secretary Semonti Stephens, in her bridal gown.

Deputy Press Secretary Semonti Stephens, in her bridal lehenga.

Speaking of which, and to add an ET touch here, a sweet story that also offers an op for a photo. Almost no one gets to wear their wedding dress twice, right? However, Semonti Stephens, young deputy press secretary to Michelle Obama, will sport her beautiful lehenga (the same traditional three-piece Indian gown she wore for her May 24 wedding)  to tonight’s dinner. “I’m considered junior staff here,” Stephens said last week. “It’s a honor to be included in such a historical event.”

.

Remember back in February, when White House Social Secretary Desirée Rogers suggested holding a sweepstakes, so that regular citizens and supporters would have an opportunity to win a coveted seat at a state dinner? Did we miss the Twitter alert on that unpublicized lottery?  Dang.

.

For fun, a few more photos of past state dinners, below. Remember to join us for a live feed later.

O.T., but the FRONTLINE thing on the credit cards is astounding.

A woman who is a lobbyist for the credit card companies was on, The camera was close up on her face, and she was the most arrogant, lying person I’ve ever seen. Evil, unblinking replicant. She basically said, “fuck all those little people. We’ll charge what we want in interest and fees. That’s how it is. Period.”

For real. They (bankers) dare to say “it’s the market, sucker.” But then it was pointed out that the “market” prime int. rate is the lowest EVER; yet cc are at the HIGHEST rate ever. Market? riiiiiiigghhhhhhttttttt.Sleepy Smileys

It was sort of disillusioning when that guy at the end said, that the Obama admin. wouldn’t do anything as “radical” as put a cap on credit card interest rates. Yet in the early days of this country, usary was illegal. They are charging loan shark rates and not even batting an eyelash.

heh heh Replicant? I love that movie…Blade Runner. She was a replicant, one designed to lie and steal. Several of the bankers said that what ever rules are written, they’ll find a way around them. That basically said to me that indeed, the best one can do is set an absolute limit on interest AND fees, or they will just be unabated in gaming their customers.

Here’s a link to the first lady’s remarks earlier, they were amazing:

    http://govne.ws/item/Remarks-by-the-First-Lady-at-Indian-State-Dinner- Press-Preview

Back when the President was a senator, he kept a picture of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of India, in his office. And it was before he was a senator, he was always a big supporter and admirer of Gandhi, because Gandhi inspired so many people — in India and all around the world — with his example of dignity and tolerance and peace. And with a simple call, Gandhi would say: To be the change we wish to see in the world — we are that change. We are that change.

So again, today is a celebration of the great ties between the world’s two largest democracies — that’s the United States and that’s India. But it’s also an opportunity to deepen those ties — and a reminder to be the change that each of us seeks — whether that’s in your home or in your school or in your community or in your country, you are all the change that we need.

Did ya’ll know how to tell if those pearls from your Mom’s jewelry box are real? Run one across your tooth. If it feels slick, it is plastic. If it feels a little “gritty,” then they are real (cultured).

    Truman served Triscuits!
“CAPITAL CULTURE: 60 years of US meals for India”
The basic White House dinner has been tweaked over the years to suit guests, invited and uninvited. A driving rain drove President John F. Kennedy’s guests to the East Room, scuttling months of planning for Mozart on the South Lawn for Indian President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. With nearly 700 guests in a tent on the lawn, the India state dinner was one of the largest such events of Bill Clinton’s presidency. George W. Bush’s dinner in 2005 was notable because he held so few overall.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 24, 2009
FACT SHEET: U.S.-INDIA GREEN PARTNERSHIP TO ADDRESS ENERGY SECURITY, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND FOOD SECURITY

President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched a Green Partnership, reaffirming their countries’ strong commitment to taking vigorous action to combat climate change, ensuring their mutual energy security, working towards global food security, and building a clean energy economy that will drive investment, job creation, and economic growth throughout the 21st century. Toward that end, Prime Minister Singh and President Obama agreed to strengthen U.S.-India cooperation on clean energy, climate change, and food security by launching the following initiatives:

    • The two countries agreed on a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation on Energy Security, Energy Efficiency, Clean Energy, and Climate Change. Through this Memorandum, both countries will work jointly to accelerate development and deployment of clean energy technologies and to strengthen cooperation on adaptation to climate change, climate science, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from forests and land use.

    • Prime Minister Singh and President Obama agreed to encourage the mobilization of .public and private resources to support a fund or funds that would invest in clean energy projects in India. This represents a major step forward in U.S. – India partnerships to strengthen their economic growth and energy security, while also addressing the threat of global climate change.

Not as much money dedicated as to the U.S. China energy partnership, but still a good effort.
