Perusing down the thread, I saw Kellygirls’s comment about the minarets. Did you see Jon Stewart last nite? They did a skewering on that. Jon Oliver interviewed the Swiss Ambassador to the UN about what “neutrality” means. For the first time, I saw how distasteful neutrality could actually be in its raw form. The man was so passionless, had no opinions. Ofcourse, the flip side is we have wars–but I now wonder if the human “thing” that has made us have wars is not violence, per se, but our passion.

Grand Junction’s little airport averages around 6 flights a day. There isn’t enough business to warrant a bar. Believe me, Coloradoans love to drink, there are several great wineries in the Grand Valley and a plethora of bars, clubs and night spots for a small town. As far as Fux News goes, I have no answer. Dipshit with a remote, I suppose.

    Good article, Kit.

One thing that I would have liked to have seen done is by first, just starting with Universal Catastrophic Coverage. Every American would be covered, no holds barred, for major medical concern: cancer, heart attack, diabetes–anything that is life threatening. Their surgeries, chemo, whatever the prescribed course of action–would be covered. I think any neo would have been hard-pressed to explain why he/she would deny that to his constituents.

I know it wouldn’t have been perfect–I know–where’s the preventive, etc? But at least there wouldn’t be Americans who are afraid to go to the Dr. when they find that lump or are having chest pains.

The rest could have fallen in later. But we need universal catastrophic NOW.

    [Reply]

    kitkatborn

    (Report comment)

That’s a good idea, Zo. A lot of catastrophic stuff isn’t preventable anyway, they keep trying to say that it is, & diet and exercise are important but like the ad says Diet and exercise are not always enough.
Then there are accidents. You can look both ways before you cross the street, and some damn fool will come around a corner too fast. (this actually happened to me one time. Almost, but something made me look behind me as I stepped off the curb.)

    [Reply]

    zoozey

    (Report comment)

The beauty of Obama presenting universal catastrophic coverage would have been the same effect that we are seeing from Al Franken’s rape bill: the neos would have looked like fools to deny it. By now, it would be over and done with. They would have had to grudgingly vote for it, or risk exposing themselves as the socios that they are.

    About the November Jobs Report

“The headline numbers on unemployment and payroll employment in today’s jobs report are encouraging, while some of the details in the report remain troubling.

    * Private and government payrolls combined shrank by just 11,000 jobs in November and earlier estimates of losses in September and October were revised down sharply. Nevertheless, payroll employment has declined for 23 straight months and net job losses since the recession began in December 2007 total 7.2 million. (Private sector payrolls have shrunk by 7.3 million jobs over the period.) Each February, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics issues revisions to its payroll employment statistics based on more complete information, and preliminary estimates indicate these revisions could add about another 800,000 job losses to these figures.
    * The pace of job losses has slowed markedly — to an average of just 104,000 per month over the past three months, compared with 645,000 jobs per month lost over the November 2008 to April 2009 period.
    * The unemployment rate, which was 4.9 percent at the start of the recession, stood at 10.0 percent in November, down from 10.2 percent in October. Potential job-seekers remained on the sideline, however, as labor force participation edged down to 65.0 percent. It has not been lower since January 1986.
    * The decline in labor force participation was offset by higher household employment, and the percentage of the population with a job was unchanged at 58.5 percent, its lowest level since October 1983.
    * The Labor Department’s most comprehensive alternative unemployment rate measure — which includes people who want to work but are discouraged from looking and people working part time because they can’t find full-time jobs — edged down to 17.2 percent in November. That figure is 8.5 percentage points higher than when the recession began, and with the exception of last month is the highest on record in data that go back to 1994.
    * Nearly two-fifths (38.3 percent) of the 15.4 million people who are unemployed have been looking for work for 27 weeks or longer. That’s the highest percentage on record in data going back to 1948. Regular unemployment insurance benefits typically run out after 26 weeks.”

Virginia will probe Salahis’ Polo Cup

“The Salahis say the America’s Polo Cup is sanctioned by the “National Polo League,” an organization whose director says was founded in 1893 and lists teams across the country. But officials for the nation’s largest polo organization said Thursday that they had never heard of the league, its teams or its purported director.

In Florida, a polo magazine editor said the Salahis submitted pictures for a December 2008 article that identified Michaele Salahi as a “former Miss USA.” No record exists of her winning that beauty crown, pageant officials said.”
