A Favorite Holiday Tradition

Each year, the White House Pastry Team comes together with other members of the White House staff to work on a favorite holiday tradition: The White House Gingerbread House. Everyone from White House carpenters to plumbers to electricians lend their expertise to help make this project a success. The recipe called for more than 150 pounds of gingerbread dough and 250 lbs of white chocolate.

After baking the gingerbread, it is cut into pieces that become the house’s foundation. The gingerbread is so thick that a band-saw is used to create the bricks for the gingerbread replica.

93563197_10This year we have two special features.

The first is a shadow box view of the State Dining Room – the room that the completed gingerbread house sits in throughout the holiday season for visitors to view. This shadow box even includes the famous painting of President Lincoln by George PA Healy that hangs over the fireplace. This room is where you’ll find the only inedible parts of the gingerbread house – the light fixtures!

WHGWe also include the new White House Kitchen Garden and our favorite four-pawed friend, Bo. Both are made out of marzipan. In the garden, you’ll find baskets of carrots, eggplants and cabbage as well as other seasonal vegetables.

White chocolate, ummmm. My sister uses it to make this yummy snack for the kids with pretzels, raisins and cereal. The salt on the pretzels gives it a nice bite.
Beautiful. Babs, if they are going to use money extraneously, at least it is edible.

Wonder what they do with it after the holidays? Word of warning…DO NOT store it in the basement where the mice can get at it!

I thought they did a nice job on the video, and since it looked yummy and involved chocolate I thought I would share.

That is so magnificent. But all I can do is think of diving in there and just cramming pieces into my mouth. I don’t know how much longer I can hold out on my low carb thing. Hep me!!!!

I don’t like white chocolate so much, but I will eat all the gingerbread to save you from the carbs.

I also prefer dark or milk chocolate. Guess it would not have worked on the “whitehouse” though….

I thought at first it was that white bakery cake frosting! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that stuff!!!

Darkest chocolate possible would be great, but you’re right.. it wouldn’t have worked.

It’s for that too, and Michelle’s Uncle maybe… They had several reasons for naming him that. I just love Bo Diddly.
