2010 should be an interesting election year.

The GOP doesn’t have idea one and has done nothing but grind the system to an almost dead stop.

The Dems on the other hand have allowed themselves to be painted as the party of corporate welfare in spite of TARP originating with Bush and a small number of them have overcome the majority to push back women’s rights.

My bet is that the election will be carried by whichever party can get out the vote by instilling hatred of the other side as opposed to any actual political agenda. The upcoming year is shaping up to be one ugly mudslinging campaign.

Much of the focus on the results of last month’s New York City elections was on Mayor Michael R. But the elections also produced a seismic political shift that so far has gone largely unnoticed: Black, Hispanic and Asian residents made up a majority of voters in a citywide race for the first time.

I don’t think it matters how noisy the progressives are, because they always get called fringe and radical and other names when they make a fuss.

The reality is that in order for the US to return to some kind of normalcy and/or economic security, policies must move left rapidly, otherwise there’s no hope for the middle class. The gap will keep widening. Letting Bush’s tax cuts expire is not enough to bring back industry and innovation to the US. With consumerism as a failed economic model because of the credit crisis, America must move toward a more protectionist trade stance. Foreign policies must change radically – stopping wars and cutting defense spending immediately. The tax code must be cleaned up and the IRS must start collecting corporate taxes by closing the loopholes that currently exist. None of this will happen so expect America to continue on the downward spiral. :-)

I understand why you feel that way, but if he and other Independents did make noise, what do you think it would achieve? Think about all the coverage teabaggers got and then think about the almost no coverage, the protesters in NYC got in 2004 during the Republican convention.

The problem is the media and it’s corporate bias, and the fact that Democrats in power need to speak out in revulsion against teabaggers and those who seek to perpetuate lies.

For instance, Grassley got the gun amendment into the healthcare bill, but he was encouraging the death panel lies. He is literally being rewarded by Democrats for being allowed keep that amendment in the bill when did not even vote for the bill.

They’ve bought into the myth that all viewpoints have equal value and are only decided by votes rather than reality.

The Centrists will NEVER call them out, because that’s the antithesis of there core beliefs as “Moderates”.

Yes they should, but the Centrists have built their entire careers upon being non-radical, child safe, no ideology, bland nothings. For them to ever stand up to anything would be to reverse the patterns of a lifetime.

For them to call the Teabags “perhaps mistaken” would have to entail an act of God. The Earth will pass away before they would engage in actual confrontation.

I hope it doesn’t rain this afternoon so I can walk over there.

I’m at the point now I almost regret not putting “the talk” into much more harsh terms.

Last fall my mother sent my (Jewish) husband an email with some Christian song and jesus and soldiers floating over the White House.

He asked her to please not send religious or political emails, and he asked really nicely.
That set off a whole series of rants by her and her disinviting us to her home.

What he should have said was “I fought as a Marine in Vietnam. I protected you as a National Guard in the LA Riots. You can thank my Jewish ass now!”

Stay positive! I spent the day before Christmas with my brother and his family; we’ve finally healed a rift that lasted years. He didn’t even invite me to his wedding. He blocked my email and he always returned apology letters I’d written plus all the photos of my kids. And I was apologizing even though I really don’t believe my actions were wrong. There was a lot of anger there. We’re all hugs and laughter now. But both people have to have an open heart and be ready for that kind of reconciliation. Good luck!

If I had a week, I would tell you about an experience I had. a psychologist told me through that experience, I got to a “state of grace” it was an awesome place to be. No anger. No hurt. No blame. It was all truth. The good the bad and the ugly. I have never felt so free. Prior to my experience, I was very close to going to the hospital for what I thought was the beginning of a nervous breakdown. I like the truth.

I find it kind of sad that people will do anything to hold their ‘position’ in a family, even if it is based on nothing real. That is the other lesson I learned. If whatever you have is base on something other than the truth and has too many conditions, it has no real value. At my age, I only want what is real.

Families are crazy entities. I feel a bit sorry for those who appear to struggle with just being nice. It sounds like your relative does a lot of projecting. Stick with the people who bring joy to your life. Find a place in your heart for those who do not. The people who don’t act loving and kind, need more of it than others. It makes sense in a weird sort of way. I happen to think you’re great!!! :hugs:

Hi kitkat!! I’m sorry about your situation. I spent Xmas eve with half of my family. The other half were 4 blocks away. We are now in factions. I don’t know what to do about it. There are too many of us, too much hurt and anger at this point to get past. I have decided to spend my time and energy with my immediate family. The rest is peripheral. We had all four kids home, so my house is crazy. All I have done for the past 4 days is laugh, cook and do mountains of laundry. It is must easier to focus on my husband and kids than to obsess about the others. Gawd knows, my oldest son takes a lot of patience, humor and energy to deal with.
