My first dog was a birthday gift when I was 5, a collie, from my grandparents’ working collies. We also had barn cats, but neither cats or dogs were allowed in the house. We also had horses and ponies, as well as ‘food’ farm critters. I’ve almost always had a dog, except during undergrad days at university. My most recent dog, Tess, died last year, and I haven’t gotten another yet. She was a foundling, and likely a keeshond-sheltie mix according to the vet. She looked a good bit like a fox, and not much bigger.

I’ve always had ‘herding’ dogs, and love them. But now I think I’d like to get one that is less hyper and a better house mate.

I think the breed is more important than the size. My dogs are 100 lbs each but they are completely mellow and always have been, even as puppies. The male could literally be perfectly happy living in a small apartment.

You should do what I’ve always done with dogs.

When they are puppies, start brushing them with one of the brushes on a vacuum. Next step, brush them with the hose attached. Third step – put the vacuum around the corner, turn it on and brush them.

They get to where they like being vacuumed.

Once they like being vacuumed, you can catch the loose hair while it still is on the dog

Have cats now. Whenever I retire from flying, I would like a dog.

My sci-fi fantasy is to have little miniature animals, like giraffes, elephants, polar bears, pandas (especially pandas!), and penguins. I have had very vivid dreams about having these creatures small–like the size of small dogs and cats that can live in my house. The dreams are so real and I wake up with a smile on my face. I’ve had dreams, too, about having little itty bitty kitties and dogs that you hold in the palm of your hand. And in one of my dreams, I have cats that are sort of born with designs on them–like paintings.

My father used to get mad at me, because at a very early age (maybe 4), I would cry about the horses falling down and dying when the calvary or the Indians or the cowboys fought. My Dad thought it was very un-natural that I was too concerned about the animals, while not really noticing that the point of the movie was the fighting men who were dying. I told him that was because it wasn’t the horses’ fault that the people were killing each other.

I think I was an animal in my past life–I mean of the non-human varieity.

I feel like he either has some maine coon in him, or maybe there is Bobcat or lynx in their heritage. Lynxes were prevalent around here in the river bottom areas until a few years ago. And we still have bobcats. They will mate with domestics.

We’ve always had cats – siamese growing up – and a variety of cats as soon as I was on my own. I’ve always loved dogs, but never enough to have one. My daughter has hamsters (only one now – “Snickers”) – which are fun. I’ve always thought guinnea pigs would be nice – they’re pretty cool creatures (but need a lot more space than those cages you buy allow for – ). When I worked in a vet clinic in one of my former lives, the vet specialized in “pocket pets” -so we got to see some GPs. They coo — kind of a gentle sound. Quite sweet, really.

Thanks – it was a long time ago. The last one was very, very sad – little Una Marie – 5 pounds (as an adult) — playing in our back patio, and some dog (off his leash, St. Bernard, I think) and his owner tramping down our hillside (we live in the mountains) – and grabbed Una in his mouth. Shook her. My mother saw the whole thing – and couldn’t stop it. That happened about 10 years ago. Mom’s never forgotten it.

My first pet was a cat named Mr. Geraldine. That was before I figured out how to tell the difference between male and female. I was 6.
When my brother was born that same year I thought I had another pet.
yrs later we moved to “the Farm” and at one time or another we had every kind of farm animal you can imagine, but always, always there was a cat.
I love dogs but have had no place til now to keep one. I have had a horse that I loved. She was part thoroughbred and loved to run. We had this routine whee last thing before we went home, we would go up to the top of the road that separated our property from the town dump & fly like the wind down to the road. Those were the days.

I dream of having a 30′ anaconda which lives in the capitol rotunda and feeds off Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats.

I like the idea of a raptor running through the Capitol building.

I’ve always had pets. I had a pet rooster while on the farm…and then the most wonderful collie. Barn cats flourished…
Next came an English Bulldog named Tina AKA registered JustinaButtercup and Thistle, the cat.

As an adult (whimsically speaking) I’ve had two Samoyeds, one Irish Setter (beautiful, but dumb as a post) and the infamous Elliot. And always a cat or two.

I can’t imagine living without them.
