Bagging the Teabaggers

by chillinout

Visitors, if you like this post, please

I am going to attend a “teabag” protest in a mid-sized town just north of Seattle. I am not attending the one in Seattle simply because I would be in rush-hour traffic on the way home. (This story isn’t really worth that aggravation). :-) I am going to take my camera, notepad and my mini-recorder and be a reporter for FreeRangeTalk.

The group in Seattle, according to their facebook page, are a global network. Yeah, right, like people in Europe and Asia give a rat’s ass about America’s tax code. (I only mention this to show how stupid these people are and the group I am going to be interviewing doesn’t have a facebook page and their web site is devoid of any actual information).

I am soliciting suggestions from you people as to what questions I should be asking them. Here are the questions I have thought up so far:

After asking them their names, where are you from, things like that, I will go into these questions. If there is someone holding a “down with socialism” sign, I am going to ask that person if they are going to participate in the biggest socialist programs of all, Social Security and Medicare, when they retire. I am also going to ask some of them why they are protesting tax policies that are going to cut their own taxes. After explaining to them that in 1773, the people that threw the tea into Boston harbor were protesting taxation without representation, and since we are now represented, do you realize you woul have been on the side of the British?

The questions need to sound somewhat legitimate, and yet have the effect of educating these people to a) how stupid they are being, and b) how they are protesting a tax plan that is going to directly benefit them and their families. Hopefully, if they are smart enough, the will realize how wrong they are in what they are doing.

So, give me your ideas of what questions I should be asking and then tomorrow or the next day, I will post the answers, (if they actually answer the questions), and pictures of the tens of protesters there are at the event.

Thanks

Here’s what I’m wondering on this eve of teabagging day.

Since people like Gingrich, Armey, and Boehner, and Fox News, are rooting these teabaggers on, will the media make the Republicans own whatever is said and done at these events? If somebody wears a racist T-shirt, will the Repubs own that? If somebody starts talking about getting armed for the coming revolution, will the Repubs own that? If somebody shrieks about banning books, will the Repubs own that?

I remember Tim Russert once asking Obama about a comment Harry Belafonte made. If Obama has to answer for Harry Freaking Belafonte, shouldn’t somebody in the media make these Republican instigators answer for the behavior of the teabaggers?

Apart from your good questions, you may want to warm them up with some non-specific questions that keep their heads open and less likely to fall back on some “message”, or defensive posture.

A few things off the top of my head

    1) What is their plan to see this thing through? What are they going to do after the tea bag protest? Do they plan on continuing to organize? Who is going to organize them in the future? Are any of them going to take up the cause personally? How much a part of their lives are they planning to dedicate to this cause? Have they contacted their senator?

    2) Few people want to seem ignorant on issues that trend positive so, ask them what concerns do they have for education, the environment, helping poor people? How will this protest help these issues ? Do they know what the organizers are going to do to address these issues, or what their positions are on these issues.?

Great idea chill, it oughta be a slice of life. One question I often shout at the teevee is “Where did deregulation get us?”

One tack I’ve found useful, if you’re comfortable with it, is opening with a question or statement that doesn’t put anyone on the defensive, and may even allow them to think you’re of like mind … just long enough to get the kind of revealing share that comes with a presumption of similar agenda. I’ve gotten some of my best quotes that way. Best to have a clean and clever plan of exit, though. ;-)

    (Report comment)

Since we are way the hell off topic here. :-) Let me throw in my two cents worth.

Some people write posts to get a positive reaction from people and when they don’t get that reaction they become upset. A lot of people don’t post because the posts they have put up have gotten very few comments, or the comments have been off topic. One person even told me that they felt it was a sign of disrespect for people not to stay on topic on a thread.

Here is my opinion on that, and the way that I post. I post things that I am interested in, and have a passion about, (mostly, a couple of times I have posted things that were just silly). If there a few comments on it, or they are all off topic, well I really don’t care because I posted it for me, not for you.

I am not saying that it isn’t great to get nice comments and approval from people, but that is not my driving force for posting and is only secondary to my reasons.

I don’t see it as a sign of disrespect, or even a bad thing for people to be off topic, or snarky or whatever. One of the founding principles for FRT was a moderation-free atmosphere. And just like it is out in the real world, when you have freedoms, you are not going to like what certain people do with those freedoms. But would you rather there be censorship so that you aren’t offended? Not me. I take the good (freedom), with the bad, (assholes like Beck et al).

Good post. I think it’s a real interesting phenomena — we’re entering this new era of communication – we’re “meeting” people over the internet, and making meaningful connections with them, and more often than not, we’ll never actually meet them in person. Perhaps this leads to a bigger investment on the part of the person who is trying to connect…. and perhaps feelings are more likely to be injured if the reaction is not what was expected or desired.

Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it!

Report: Country ripe for right-wing recruitment

By EILEEN SULLIVAN – 9 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Homeland Security officials are warning that right-wing extremists could use the bad state of the U.S. economy and the election of the country’s first black president to recruit new members to their cause.

In an intelligence assessment issued to law enforcement last week, Homeland Security officials said there was no specific information about an attack from right-wing extremists in the works.

The agency warns that an extended economic downturn with real estate foreclosures, unemployment and an inability to obtain credit could foster an environment for extremists to recruit new members who may not have been supportive of these causes in the past.

In November, law enforcement officials were seeing more threats and unusual interest against then- President-elect Barack Obama than ever before.

I sent a scathing report ( quotes and all ) and he or it, was banned. But that trash was sitting there for quite a while. I have never figured out what the policy really is and now I don’t have to. Wheeeeee

Realistically, this is just a propaganda event planned and coordinated by corporations, Fox News, etc.

The so-called “grassroots” people who will be there will be the “dittoheads” who follow the marching orders they’re given.

Don’t mean to be too cynical but I think it’s very ambitious to think you’re going to be among people who could be educated or enlightened to anything other than doing as they’ve been programmed.

With that in mind, I’ve seen some very good documentaries shot by people in similar situations. What their approach seems to be is to be as friendly and impartial as possible in asking non-accusatory questions.

Their approach was not to ask pressing questions but to use a series of non-threatening questions to encourage the loons to speak up and begin voluntarily expressing themselves.

Never arguing facts or issues with them but allowing them to expose their hatred, racism, prejudice, etc. openly, thus telling us much more about them than parroting Rush would accomplish.

    You could ask them:

If they know what the current tax rates are or what they were under Bush compared to Obama.

    To Define socialism.

What do they hope to accomplish with the protest.

Would they like to get rid of all services that the Federal government provides because of taxes.

Would they like to get rid of all socialist programs including SS and Medicare?

Ask them questions about the Boston Tea Party.

Ask them questions about what the branches of government are called and other civics questions.

Bottom line, I think you will get the most enlightening footage and be safe and sound in that crowd by asking questions as a neutral reporter and finding ways to draw them out through a comfort level with youas opposed to asking any strongly confrontational questions which will likely inspire anger and the simple regurgitation of their talking points.

FWIW, I think the coolest footage you’ll get is what they volunteer to talk about.

    Goddamit you’re all gonna die

How dare you sit there and drink all our beer
Oh it’s made for us workers who sweat spit and swear
The minds of our daughters are poisoned by you
With your communistic politics and them negro blues

I am talking militias, gun racks in the back windows of pickups etc. so I know how to talk to these people and a little bit how they think.

I can fit in with them. :-) At least, I think I can.

LOL No, that goes to my daughter. In fact everything goes to my daughter.

However, my car being a classic and all, and my daughter being known for her reckless driving, I cringe every time I think about her driving my baby.

You be safe, Chillin’. Some of these people are fiercely stupid and possibly dangerous.

That being said, perhaps you could bring up the fact that only the very top marginal tax rates are being raised and only to 1990’s levels, and add on “how were things going for you in the 1990s?”

Ask them if anyone remembers that the top marginal tax rate under Eisenhower (R) was 91%. And if they remember that the middle class flourished in the 50s and did until the “redistribution of wealth” by successive Republican administrations to the rich.

Please try not to get beat up.
